This morning on my way to work, I was listening to Third Day and the song Creed came on. I've always loved this song and it has a deep meaning to me (as it should with all Christians). If you've never heard it before, a you can listen to it below.
Most of us as Christians never really think about our core beliefs that much. We usually just think about the hot topic at the moment (ie. love, forgiveness, heaven, grace, etc.). We just rarely think about the basics. So here it is, the Apostles' Creed.
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
and born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
who was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
and on the third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of the Father.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
This is amazing. It's so simple, but yet sums up practically everything that we as Christians [should] believe.
In the song version, as performed by Third Day, there is a line that isn't in the creed, but stands out to me. It says "I believe what I believe. It's what makes me what I am. I did not make it, no it is making me. It is the very truth of God and not the invention of any man."
I absolutely love that line because it is my heart's cry. I don't want to shape my beliefs, I want my beliefs to shape me. I want to be what I believe instead of my beliefs becoming what I am. As a Christian, this should be out cry, to be shaped and molded by the truth of God.
So may you let the truth of God shape your life. May you not try to fit your beliefs into your lifestyle, rather may you form your lifestyle around your beliefs.
